2021 Toyota Prius vs 2021 Prius Prime

2021 Toyota Prius vs 2021 Prius Prime

Toyota has spent the past two decades at the forefront of the hybrid vehicle industry. The 2021 Toyota Prius and Prius Prime continue with that grand tradition. Both the Prius and the Prius Prime are solid options for drivers that want to live an eco-friendlier lifestyle and make sustainable vehicle choices. The Prius and Prius Prime also provide increased safety, high-tech features, and Toyota reliability.

Powertrains

The traditional Prius and the Prius Prime are very similar vehicles, though the Prius has been around for almost two decades and the Prime was introduced in 2017. The major difference between the two is that the Prius is a hybrid vehicle while the Prime is a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV).

The Prius runs exclusively on gasoline, which works in combination with the electric battery to increase fuel economy to around 4.4 L/100km combined. In contrast, the Prime features a larger, rechargeable electric battery that offers 25 miles of pure electric driving before the gasoline engine kicks in. This offers the Prime an electric/hybrid driving range of 1,035km.

Pricing and Models

The 2021 Toyota Prius is offered in four model varieties in Barrhaven and across Canada. Starting at $28,850, the Prius's models are: Base, AWD-E, Technology, and Technology AWD-E. The traditional Prius is the only one available with all-wheel drive (AWD) to confidently conquer all weather conditions.

The 2021 Toyota Prius Prime starts at $33,550 and is only available in a Base and Upgrade model. The Base Prime model is almost identical to the Base Prius model, except that it offers additional convenience features such as a heated steering wheel and full-colour digital gauge cluster.

Cargo Space

Due to the larger battery pack, the 2021 Toyota Prius Prime loses out on cargo space to the Prius. The Prime offers 560 litres of cargo space behind the second row while the Prius provides 775 litres of space. For drivers in Barrhaven that need to haul more gear, the Prius is the best option.

While they are very similar cars, there are enough differences between the 2021 Toyota Prius and Prius Prime to keep drivers going back and forth. For increased fuel economy and a more high-tech interior, the Prime is the way to go. For more cargo space and a lower initial price tag, the Prius is the vehicle of choice.
